Anatomical Waxes

The collection of anatomical wax models in this room features dissection scenes and also illustrates surgical procedures (such as amputations, the application of splints, etc.), clinical manifestations of diseases, embryology, childbirth, and more. These waxes served as educational tools for training future physicians in the early 19th century, later for paramedics, and eventually found their way into fairground caravans in the 20th century.

In the Spitzner Hell Room, a series of anatomical wax models vividly depict the manifestations of syphilis, gonorrhea, alcoholism, and more as they were commonly seen in the 19th century but have largely disappeared since the advent of antibiotics. The intense realism of these models was initially intended for educational purposes, but also served as a stark warning to the general public against risky behaviors.
