General History
The room opens with a series of Etruscan ex-votos and Greco-Roman marbles. It continues with references to religious medicine in the Middle Ages, old paintings showing medical scenes (such as quacks removing the “stone of madness,” urine gazers, etc.), ancient sculptures, and therapeutic approaches like cupping, bloodletting kits, and clysters, all preceding the scientific era.
The great medical discoveries of the 19th century are then explored, highlighting advances in diagnostics (stethoscopes, microscopes, and other instruments) and therapeutics (a 19th century pharmacy and rural dispensaries).
The room is marked throughout by references to the great pioneers of the Healing Arts.
